Hiking is certainly one of the most popular activities in Cumbria and this largely takes place in the Lake District. The wonderful thing about this region is that there is hiking to suit every skill level, there are several mountains over 3000 feet high which provide a challenge to experienced hikers but there are also plenty of easy walks for people with less experience.
Many of these easier walks are also perfect for families with young children. If you are looking to do some serious hiking then it is best to base yourself in the Lake District National Park itself and there are plenty of hotels Cumbria has to offer in the park.
Keswick would be regarded as the major town for tourism in the Lake District and there are many accommodation options here. One of the most popular types of accommodation is bed-and-breakfast and they abound in the town, unless you are arriving in the peak season you are going to have no trouble finding somewhere even if you haven't booked ahead.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay look to the area just east of the bus station and you will find plenty of bed-and-breakfasts offering a night stay for a very reasonable price.
Cumbria hotels can become expensive in the peak season as many people come to the Lake District to enjoy some hiking, if you are on a budget then there is a popular youth hostel just out of town which provides accommodation for people on a shoestring.
Other than its beautiful scenery Cumbria is famous for its food and drink and its most successful and famous export is the Cumberland sausage. While these are widely available anywhere in the UK there is nothing quite like having one where they have been locally made. Most restaurants will be serving them up and they can provide a very sustaining meal especially if you are going out for a hike.
Kendal Mint cake is another local food that is popular with hikers because of its high sugar content, this is widely available anywhere in the Lake District and would be a great snack to take on a hike. Be warned though, many people find it much too sweet as it is composed nearly entirely of sugar! The energy content might just be worth it if you are trudging up to 3000 feet though.
